Safe Use, Storage and Disposal of Paints
Use
- Where possible choose water based paints, they are easier to clean up, are non hazardous and safer to use than solvent based paints.
- Only buy enough paint for the job; ask your Dulux Paint supplier for assistance in calculating the exact quantity required or use our online calculator at www.dulux.co.nz
- Always read the label for information on the correct use and application of the product.
- Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye wear while painting.
- Always paint with adequate ventilation during application and drying to minimise the risk of any adverse health affects from inhaling paint fumes.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke while painting.
- If you are using oil based paints, clean equipment in the recommended solvent and retain the washings in a sealed container and allow the solids to settle so that the solvent can be reused.
Storage
- Always keep paint containers tightly sealed when not in use.
- Store away from foodstuffs, and out of reach of children in a cool dry place.
Disposal
- Use up any leftover paint by applying a further coat or for touching up.
- Where suitable use it as a first coat on another job.
- Donate any left overs to family, friends or community groups who may have a need for the product.
- Any water-based paints or water from cleanup, which is unsuitable for further use, can be mixed with shredded paper, cat litter, mulch or other absorbent material and allowed to dry before disposal via the household rubbish collection.
- Any solvent-based paints or cleanup solvent should be taken to a hazardous waste collection facility for safe disposal.
- Check with your local council for advice on where the nearest depot is in your area.
