The bathroom revealed!
It’s all finally come together. This is the fifth and final week for
the Henshaw’s bathroom renovation. The finishing touches are on – the vanity, toilet and laundry tub are in and the NRG lighting is wired up.
Our
first tip for week 5 concerns bathroom mirrors. Aside from shaving and
make up application, mirrors are used to make a space look bigger than
it actually is (you only need to go to the produce section of your
local supermarket to see this in action). But there are a few things to
consider and the most important is sightlines. One major no-no is to
put a mirror opposite the toilet. No one wants to catch a glimpse of
themselves on the loo, so avoid at all costs. Usually a mirror will be
above the sink but it can be on a perpendicular wall to the left or
right – this works especially well if it is a mirror/cabinet to allow
extra storage.
Speaking of storage, it’s important to consider
shelf space in the laundry. Matt and Rowena went with shelves from
Juralco and a laundry tub from Robinhood.
They incorporated drawers underneath the laundry tub because they knew
that you can never have too much storage space! They chose the laundry
tub for its flexibility and size and had it ‘plumbed in’ so it can
supply water to the washing machine and also let them soak clothes in
the tub.
Another choice is to have heated towel rails or not. Matt and Rowena went with a heated towel rail from DC Short
. Of course it’s always nice to dry yourself with a toasty-warm towel
on a winter’s morning, but they do cost more to install and to run,
especially if you forget to turn them off. Ultimately the choice
depends on your budget (and perhaps how chilly your local area is).
Matt
and Rowena are delighted with the results of their new bathroom.
They’ve maximized their space by removing the wall between the old
bathroom and laundry, relined and installed ventilation to resist
mould, hidden the laundry area behind sliding doors, and have lights
that work!
We hope that over the last five weeks some of you
other renovators have seen that it’s easier than you might think and
have picked up some ideas and tips for your own projects.
